Tyres – Manual Handling
As we all know tyres can be heavier than anticipated, often well above 25kg for car and 4x4 tyres and over 100kg for truck and plant tyres.
Most establishments have a purpose made tyre rack to store new tyres.
Several problems can arise in handling tyres - even before we consider the forces equipment and operations involved in fitting them.
Looking at the problems there are some basic steps to making the operations safer;
- Make sure you and your colleagues are aware of the risks.
- Make sure the tyre rack is securely bolted to the wall and floor.
- Avoid manual handling if possible - especially from the top tyre rack level.
- Use appropriate equipment – do not use a ‘pole’ to dislodge a tyre off the top rack level or climb up the tyre rack to 'pull' tyres off.
- Ensure the heavier (larger size) tyres are kept on the bottom rack level or other ground level storage place.
- If tyres have to be moved from rack to vehicle it may be safer to have a trolley or other mechanical handling device rather than carry or roll tyres across the workplace.
